First trip to the site in Debre Berhan

After we arrived at the hotel and met our Habitat rep Zee - we got the bus down to the site... Unfortunately the bus got stuck in the muck.... Which gave the children in the community a good laugh!!! Unsure if it actually got unstuck as we ended up walking back.. See below for pic.

We got a very warm welcome from the community - we were greeted by about 20 people clapping and shaking our hands.. We were very shocked by this. Zee showed us around the houses we will be working on - habitat have already done a lot of work in this area and the houses looked very well. He told us that tomorrow we will be digging foundations for one of the houses. The following days we may be working on other houses carrying out different tasks. After we were shown around - we had some time to spend with the local people , everyone was very friendly - and they all had pretty good English which we were surprised at. The children were great fun and loved posing for some pictures - Sharon even taught them the word 'selfie'. On our walk back to the hotel we got to see some of the markets... Some of the group still with missing luggage even got welly boots for 100 birr... Which is £3! We had a lovely dinner and Sharon and Louise took us through some group activities giving everyone a chance to talk about what made them join this Habitat group and what they will be expecting from the trip. We are looking forward to getting back to the site tomorrow and getting stuck into the work - Jim and Gary are setting us strict deadlines for getting the digging complete - using their construction skills to train us up ha ha!
